What is success?

How do you know or when do you realise, you are successful?

What does it mean to you and why is it important?

I find it incredibly interesting what drives people and why it drives them.

For many people the definition of success is one or a combination of the following:

  • Contentment
  • Happiness
  • Financial Security
  • Job title
  • Size of their house
  • Where they live
  • Owning their own company
  • Love
  • Kids
  • Health
  • And so on…..

Given we all measure success differently, even brothers and sisters or very close friends, why is it so varied?

Is it to do with our parents or guardians, our peer group, TV, advertising, a combination of these or other things, like it’s simply how we are wired?

We should remember that what’s important to us isn’t necessarily important to someone else.

Sometimes we look upon others and think how lucky they are or how successful they are.  However, one of the things I’ve learned over time is that you can only guess at what’s going on in a persons life.  You may believe they have everything they ever wanted and they are incredibly lucky and fortunate, however, behind closed doors there may be a huge amount of dissatisfaction or unhappiness.

I was reminded of the following recently:

“Success is when you are happy to go to work, happy to come home from work and you’re wanted and welcomed at both”.

I believe that’s a fantastic way to look at things, it’s very simple but most great things are, aren’t they?

To be truly happy and content surely both the home life and work life need to be in some sort of balance or integration.  If we get that simple foundation right, there is a very good chance that everything else we want will flow to us, or maybe we simply won’t want quite as much?
